History: Carlsbad was originally settled by the Luiseno Indians in 1842. In 1883, a retired sea captain discovered a spring of artesian mineral water, and Carlsbad became a hub for health seekers and horticulturists alike. The city was incorporated in 1952. Tourists and locals flock to the city’s famed flower fields, and the health consicious visitors tap into the wellness at Chopra Center, founded in 1996 by Deepak Chopra. The sprawling, all-enclosed Plaza Camino Real (now Shoppes at Carlsbad) opened in 1969, giving the county it’s sixth biggest mall. Carlsbad has also become home for Legoland California in 1999.
