Beautiful beaches, historic homes and the world-famous Hotel Del Coronado is this city’s jewel. Coronado is known as a Navy town with the adjacent North Island Naval Air Station.
History: The city grew up around the Hotel Del Coronado, which opened in February 1888, leas then three years after developers bought the land. While the Del is considered to be the city’s crown jewel, Coronado’s beaches is consistently rated top 10 in the nation. It has a nick name of the “Crown City”. The city and its members take pride in keeping this community clean and safe and has one of the lowest crime rates in all of San Diego county.
Things to Do: After visiting the Hotel Del Coronado, make sure to walk around the center of town along Orange Avenue, it has beautiful historic buildings and store fronts. The Ferry Landing Marketplace is home to shops, restaurants and strolling along the waterfront. Take the ferry from Coronado’s Landing to downtown San Diego. The Silver Strand State Beach is popular amongst cyclists for its 11-mile bike paths.
