Del Mar is a beach town that boasts iconic horse-racing venue and is home to the San Diego County Fair.
History: Jacob Taylor is considered Del Mar’s founding father. He purchased 338 acres in 1885 with a dream of turning the land into a resort. He called it “the most attractive place in the entire coast”. The Stratford Inn (now Hotel Indigo) opened in 1910 and became a magnet for the Hollywood scene. Bing Crosby and his partners established the racetrack, a year after the county fair opened. The city became incorporated in 1959. Some notable locals visited Del Mar frequently were Jimmy Durante, Burt Bacharach and his wife Angie Dickenson and Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz (I Love Lucy show) were frequent visitors of the race tracks and owned a home in Del Mar as well. The fairgrounds are still home to horse racing and other events and conventions.
